What a year 2024 is going to be for trail running

What a year 2024 is going to be for trail running in Australia and Globally! TR2032 volunteer, aspiring trail running elite athlete and environmental science student, Billy Curtis, shares his thoughts below on showcasing Brisbane’s natural environment through trail running, and what trail running at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games could mean for the sport.
Over the past decade there has been boom in participation, publicity, and professionalism in the trail running world and we now meet at a crossroad of commercialisation and traditional values. Growth and expansion have been inevitable, and the community of grassroots outdoor enthusiasts now hold the key towards the future of trail running, treasuring the traditional values whilst building towards a truly global sport at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. There is plenty of work to be done in creating a recognisable local, national, and global championship to bring the best athletes to the big screens and the next few years will shape our future. If the future of our trail running is important to you, there are plenty of ways to share your voice and we welcome you to be a part of this vision.
Drawing from the parallels of climbing, a similarly a set-in stone traditional sport where elite athletes have generally struggled to display their performances on a global stage in the past. Debuting in Tokyo 2020 Olympics and looking to be included into future Paralympics, the event was controversial due to the climbing communities concern for losing traditional principles. After climbing’s success at the Tokyo Olympics, there was a huge spotlight on climbing and an incredible upsurge in participation. The climbing community flourished and so many watched, read, and learnt about the principles of rock climbing. The sport became more accessible, inclusive, and allowed for anyone to participate and be welcomed to learn the values that created a now global sport. Just like the trail running community, climbing has shown that having a strong grassroots community can allow a sport to grow whilst not being consumed by commercialisation.

Bringing trail running to Brisbane's (Meanjin) doorstep running across Turrbal and Yuggera land at Victoria Park, a repurposed golf course. What an amazing day showcasing how trail running is growing as a sport and capturing the passion of young and old.

Another awesome example of Southeast Queensland’s trail running community & events with @theguzzlerultra on this weekend! Walkabout Creek, race Checkpoint 1, is one of the best places to be on a Saturday morning. The stoke was high as runners streamed through and the CP1 team looked after all their needs. @trailrunningqld will be volunteering at the 21km race on Sunday. See ya’ll there! @trailcowboys
